Find Federal Inmate Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons system after a case connected with Roscommon County, first determine whether BOP actually held the person. No federal prison was identified in Roscommon County. BOP covers sentenced federal custody, while the U.S. Marshals Service manages federal pretrial detention and transport through many possible holding sites. The public locator can show a release date and a location such as “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody,” but those terms only establish the end of BOP custody. The federal docket, actual facility, and agency record may be needed to identify what happened next.

Federal Releases Connected to Roscommon County

Federal custody is agency-specific. A Roscommon County Jail departure can become a transfer to federal authority if the jail or court record identifies a federal pickup, but a roster disappearance alone does not support that conclusion. BOP concerns sentenced federal prisoners. USMS commonly manages federal pretrial detention and movement, often through local or contract facilities. ICE civil detention is a different system.

A BOP result with a past Release Date and a Location of “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” confirms that BOP custody ended. It does not prove unrestricted presence in the community. The person may have entered another correctional system, begun federal supervised release, or become subject to another authority. The destination must come from the release record, federal docket, supervision record, or receiving agency.

No federal prison was found in Roscommon County, so there is no local federal facility desk or county federal-release roster to call. The correct route begins with the national locator and then follows the actual federal court district and institution shown by the case or agency record.

Confirm a Federal BOP Release

The BOP inmate locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. Search by a unique identifier when possible. BOP Register Numbers use the format #####-###. The locator also accepts DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers, or a name search with required first and last name and optional middle name, race, age, and sex.

  1. Open the BOP inmate locator.
  2. Search by Register Number or another supported identifier when one is known.
  3. For a name search, enter the required names and add other identity details to narrow the match.
  4. Compare Name, Register Number, Age, Race, and Sex before reading the custody fields.
  5. Read Release Date and Location together. A past date plus Released or Not in BOP Custody concerns BOP only.
  6. If the result is unclear, consult the federal docket and request the specific agency record.

The BOP locator page is the official release search route for sentenced federal custody connected to Roscommon County.

Federal Inmate Release Records

The BOP locator record guide explains the scope of public locator data, but a row may not show the legal basis for release, the actual institution departure time, or the next custodian. The federal court docket can provide the judgment, detention order, release order, dismissal, sentence, or supervised-release terms. Use the case number, district, and dates from that record to identify the right agency and facility.

Federal Records Routes

BOP: Submit an agency records request through the Bureau of Prisons FOIA process.
USMS: Office of General Counsel, FOIA Unit, CG-3, 15th Floor, Washington, DC 20530-0001
Online routing: FOIA.gov can direct a federal request to the proper component.

A focused request through the BOP FOIA channel should state the full name, Register Number or other identifier, date range, federal court and district, actual holding facility if known, and requested record type. For USMS, ask for a specific transport, detention, transfer, or release record rather than a broad history. Privacy, law-enforcement, and security exemptions may limit what is released.

A BOP request and a USMS request are not interchangeable. BOP holds sentenced-prison records. USMS handles pretrial detention and transport records within its role. The clerk of the federal court maintains judicial filings and orders. Send the request to the office that created the needed record.

About Federal Custody Near Roscommon

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is a national sentenced-prison system. It is not part of the Roscommon County Sheriff's Department or MDOC. No BOP institution was identified in Roscommon County, and the county JailTracker should not be used as a federal offender locator after transfer.

USMS has a different mission. It manages federal pretrial detention and transportation and may use local or contract facilities. That arrangement can make the physical building and legal custodian different. A person physically held in a local facility on federal authority remains a federal-case inquiry, and the federal docket often supplies the most durable public account of the detention or release order.

Legal custodian: the agency or authority responsible for the detention. It may differ from the operator of the building where the person is physically housed.

Federal Release Status Terms

“Released” and “Not in BOP Custody” are limited to BOP. They do not describe whether federal supervision began or whether another jurisdiction took custody. A future Release Date is projected and may change, including after sentence recalculation under federal law. BOP says the locator is updated daily but warns that dates may not be current.

BOP displayCareful meaning
ReleasedThe person is no longer held by BOP; next status is not resolved
Not in BOP CustodyBOP is not the current custodian; another authority or supervision may apply
IN TRANSITMovement or transport, not release
UNKNOWNThe term or release date is not determined in the locator
Future Release DateA projected date that can change

A locator entry may also involve a pretrial detainee, dismissed case, material witness, or civil contempt matter. It does not by itself prove a conviction. Read the federal docket before labeling the legal outcome.

USMS Release and Transport Records

USMS has no public historical release locator comparable to BOP. For a federal pretrial case, locate the federal docket, read detention and release orders, and identify the actual holding facility. A court order can authorize release before transport or processing is complete, so the order time may not equal the moment the person left the facility.

“IN TRANSIT” in the BOP system is especially important. It can describe movement between institutions or temporary removal from BOP control for transport, including transport by USMS. It must not be rewritten as release. The receiving facility, marshal record, or later locator status resolves the movement.

For current operational direction, use the USMS district finder for the district connected to the federal case. For historical proof, use a specific FOIA request with the court district and date range. There is no legitimate Roscommon County shortcut around those federal channels.

Roscommon Transfers Into Federal Custody

A person disappearing from Roscommon County Jail may have posted bond, completed a local term, been transferred to MDOC, returned to another county, or moved under federal authority. The current JailTracker does not distinguish those outcomes after the person leaves its active roster. Ask the jail release record for the release disposition, authority, and receiving agency when recorded and releasable.

If the record names USMS or BOP, move to the federal docket and correct locator. If it names ICE, use immigration channels instead. If no federal authority appears, do not broaden the search merely because the local roster has no match. The Roscommon release record guide explains how to request the county event record that identifies the next channel.

Future Federal Inmate Release Dates

A future BOP Release Date is not a confirmed departure. Sentence computation can change, and BOP specifically warns that public dates may not be current. First Step Act recalculation is one possible source of change. Court action, another sentence, or a detainer may also affect what occurs when BOP custody ends. Keep the displayed search date and Register Number with any saved result.

The federal judgment is the starting legal record, but a reader should not calculate a final release date from the sentence length alone. Credit, computation rules, and agency updates require official treatment. If a public date materially differs from the judgment, ask BOP for the relevant computation or correction route instead of choosing the more favorable date.

Federal Release and Supervision Records

End of BOP confinement can be followed by federal supervised release. The locator's “Released” label does not describe the conditions, length, or status of that supervision. Read the judgment and later federal docket entries, then contact the responsible federal office through the case-specific route when confirmation is needed.

This is another reason that “Not in BOP Custody” cannot be translated into unrestricted community presence. A person may be supervised, transferred, detained by another authority, or otherwise outside BOP's institutional control. Only the matching court and agency records can distinguish those outcomes.
